When it comes to assisted living, people might think that it is a fairly new creation. After all, we live in a society where not too long ago, dumping your aged parents in a nursing home was generally frowned upon. However, in more ways than one, assisted living has actually been around for many years, even though in slightly different forms. Certainly, many bills and acts have been passed since then to make it more accessible to everyone.
If you look back throughout the years, you might be shocked to see that something akin to assisted living had already existed in the 1880s. However, these dealt more towards the marginalised and socially handicapped. There was certainly a lot of stigma involved if one were to place his family members in any of these institutions. Back in those days, due to budget cuts and insufficient funding, assisted living facilities were kept to the bare minimum and indeed, many people suffered while staying there.
The situation hardly changed much throughout the years with each community arguing their case for a centralised facility. This continued on into the 20th century where legislations were passed but to no avail. It seemed that there would never be a time for the marginalised to enjoy such privileges as to having a facility that caters strictly to their own.
Time went past and it was in the 1990s when the concept of assisted living really took off. Prior to that, nursing homes and aged care centres were often at the storm of controversy because they were badly run and proper care was not given to the inhabitants. However, along came a new idea whereby the aged and the sick would not just be dumped into a place for them to be left alone. Age is only a number and half the time, people fall ill because they are lonely and unhappy.
So was born what would be known as the modern assisted living centres. It became a place for people to gather and have fun as a group. Different levels of medical aid were also offered, depending on the need and the situation. However, the crux of the matter is that assisted living facilities give the aged a new lease on life by giving them something to look forward to.
