What to Know about Private Health Insurance

Finding the right private health insurance does not have to be difficult. Many people covered under their employer’s plan have not had to think much about their health insurance. You take what is offered and assume it is all that is available. However in recent years many health insurance firms are offering private policies that are well priced and provide great coverage. With a just a little time and effort, you can find out if you can do better on your health care rates and coverage.

When looking into private health insurance the first thing you will probably notice is that there are a range of traditional and specialized plans available. The traditional Family and Individual plans are most well-known, but there are specialized options that might be a good choice for some people. One type of lower cost policy is known as a critical care policy. A critical care policy is designed for those people who want low cost coverage in the event of a significant medical event or catastrophic illness. If you are in good health and rarely choose to see a doctor or medical care, this type of policy can save significant money while still providing a financial safety net in case of major medical issues. Hospital care coverage is another option and it covers only in-patient hospital procedures, so things like doctor’s office visits, blood work, and x-rays are not covered. This type of plan is most often used when the costs of major surgery is a concern.

The other type of special insurance is known as personal accident. This type of insurance covers the major medical costs associated with an accident and in some cases loss of wages. These specialized plans can often be purchased alone if cost is a major concern or often times they can be added to an existing policy (known as a ‘rider’) to provide more coverage.

The other main consideration with private health insurance is pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing conditions are medical issues you have at the time you sign up for coverage. Some medical conditions will not be covered by the policy, so it makes sense not to wait until you have a need before buying insurance as the rates will be higher or you may not be able to obtain coverage at all.
