According to a research report from Ohio State University, your body absorbs lycopene in orange tomatoes more readily than that which is available in red tomatoes. The study involved a group of participants who ate lunches containing 300 grams (g) of sauce made from either tangerine or red tomatoes. Data showed that, while both sauces increased blood concentrations of lycopene—the increase was greater in those who ate tomato sauce made with orange tomatoes. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that provides support for your heart, eyes, lungs, digestive system, kidney and immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. It’s also been shown to play a role in promoting healthy prostate function and facilitating normal cell growth.
