Finding that “must-have” beauty product can be costly and confusing. So how do you choose what to load your beauty arsenal with? SELF Magazine asked more than 2,200 readers to test over a thousand new hair, skin, and cosmetic products and rate them based on things like texture, color, and ease of use. “This year we tested 1,187 products, and there were 87 winners. Products range in price from $4 to $125,” said Elaine D’Farley, beauty director for SELF Magazine. It all starts with a clean slate. L’Oreal’s acne cleanser comes with a scrubber that helps blast blemishes. Sephora’s facial moisturizer quenched readers’ dry skin and Garnier’s eye serum “rolled away” the competition. “It stimulates the circulation, which actually then helps drain the puffiness and the dark circles,” said D’Farley. Get glowing below the neck with the best bar soap from Olay, a hit for its massaging nodules. “I loved the quote from the reader who said that she used this soap, and for the first time in 12 years, her husband noticed how soft her skin was,” said D’Farley. For a “scent-sual” after-bath boost, layer on Beyonce’s fragranced body lotion. Don’t feel like hitting the showers? Sop up oil on your strands with Keratin’s dry shampoo. “It made my hair feel really clean, and it gave it a lot more texture,” said Jean Cabacungan-Jarvis, tester. Then, polish off your look with Tresemme’s finishing spray. “I didn’t even detect it in my hair, and it really helped with my static,” said Jessica Lee, tester. For makeup, Origins’ foundation helped create an even canvas. The winning concealer by Shiseido sent dark circles packing. And Sonia Kashuk’s illuminating powder simply sparkled. “Illuminating is a big, huge, new trend in skincare. A lot of times there’s mica in the products, which help to reflect light, and so you’re going to look a little bit more glowy,” said D’Farley. Estee Lauder’s colorful eye shadow also scored “glowing” reviews. Next, lengthen lashes with the winning lash treatment, a drugstore score from Wet n’ Wild. Achieve even greater heights with mascara by Christian Dior. “The wand spins 360 degrees like a little ballerina out of a ballerina box,” said D’Farley. And to punch up your pucker, try Clinique’s “chubby” lipstick. “People loved the pigmented color,” said D’Farley. “It’s bright, but a little bit sheer.” The following are all the winning products mentioned above.
