Meat Heavy Diets Raise Heart Disease and Cancer Risk

Sep 8, 2010 Posted Under: Healthy Food Advices

Saturated fats in foods such as bacon, sausage, beef, and eggs raise cholesterol, specifically LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol, which increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, so consuming meat heavy diets, even popular low-carb, weight-loss programs like Atkins, put your health at risk.

On the flipside, diets rich in fruits and vegetables have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL, or “good,” cholesterol, which decreases your risk of heart disease.

Nutrients found in plant heavy diets have also been reported to reduce cancer risk, while consuming a lot of animal products may heighten your likelihood of developing cancer.

And now new research in the Annals of Internal Medicine claims low-carb diet plans high in meat raise the risk cancer and heart disease, but low-carb diets comprised of plant goods decrease these health risks.

Two studies following 85,000 women and 44,500 men from 1980 and 2006 found men and women consuming a meat-based low-carb diet had a 23% higher risk of death, a 14% increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, and were 28% more likely to die from cancer.

But a new version of Atkins, called “Eco-Atkins,” which incorporates vegetable-based fats and proteins, had a 20% reduce risk of dying, and a 23% lower death rate from heart disease. Study resul

Unhealthy Weight Linked To Higher Mortality Rate In Female Colon Cancer Patients

Sep 8, 2010 Posted Under: Healthy Food News

Older women who have been diagnosed with colon cancer and have an unhealthy weight may are at a higher mortality rate, according to a study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

The team of investigators based their current research on information collected during a 20-year study that monitored more than 1,000 female cancer patients. During that time, a total of 493 patients passed away, and nearly 300 of the causes of death were associated with colon cancer.

After analyzing the medical records, the researchers measured the body mass index (BMI) of those who were either over or underweight.

Safety groups warn about lithium battery danger

Sep 3, 2010 Posted Under: Healthy Food News

Cara and Terry George light up when they think of their daughter.

“She was a beautiful, happy, healthy baby girl and she was and always will be our true joy,” said Cara.

But they endured crushing heartbreak when Brenna died at just 18 months after swallowing a battery.

“We scoured our house and we have no idea where it came from,” said Terry.

It was a lithium battery – the round kind found in many household items.

“Bathroom scales, car remotes, remotes for your automatic garage door openers,” said Colleen Driscoll, International Association for Child Safety.

They are even in those musical greeting cards.

Liquid diet helps Crohn’s patients

Aug 31, 2010 Posted Under: Healthy Food News

Steve Marduch has Crohn’s disease, an inflammation of the digestive tract. Eating was followed by stomach pains and vomiting. He was taking standard steroidal treatment, until his mom became worried.

“All those drugs that are used for Crohn’s disease have very bad, very bad side effects,” said Svetlana Smarduch.

She found a treatment used across Europe called Enteral Nutrition. It’s a nutritional shake that put Steve’s disease in remission.

“It’s safer than most other modes of treatment we have available,” according to Dr. Randolph McConnie, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Rush University Medical Center.

Although steroids work, they can increase the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and infections.

ResVibrant Review

Aug 31, 2010 Posted Under: Healthy Food Reviews

Overview

The most common question we get via email from readers – and perhaps what you’re thinking right now – is: “What product do you use or recommend to your family/friends”? Obviously different types of skin can have different needs. But, the answer to this question for most of our panel has been ResVibrant. Here’s why:

But, it’s also one of the few products that come with anti-aging soft gel capsules that promote healthy skin from within. This approach, (which seems like a no-brainer when you think about it), seems well ahead of its time. (Frankly, we’re su
