Tissue-bank shortage: Brain child

Oct 23, 2011 Posted Under: Healthy Food Advices

David Amaral wanted to watch the young brain take shape. He thought that studying post-mortem brains under the microscope would help him to work out why children with autism often have abnormalities in the key structures that drive emotion and behaviour. But he soon found that existing brain banks couldn’t give him what he needed. “It’s just too hard to get high-quality tissue,” he says. The banks may contain hundreds or even thousands of brains — but not from children, and not necessarily in the best condition.

Amaral, who is director of research at the MIND (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute at the University of California, Davis, is not the only scientist eager for access to brains from children. T

In contrast, the most common food allergies are delayed onset meaning the allergic symptoms are slower in appearing. In fact, reactions may take several hours to days to appear. Type 3 or delayed onset food allergies occur in 45-60 percent of the population. Yet, most people know little about this type of food allergy. Similarities between Delayed and Immediate-Onset Food Allergies Both types of food allergies involve the immune system and are in response to eating particular foods. Read more…

Weight and Appetite Regulated by Estrogen in the Brain

Oct 17, 2011 Posted Under: Healthy Food News

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are the first to show that estrogen in the brain controls female body weight by regulating appetite and energy use. The findings of this mouse study are potentially important for postmenopausal women, who often gain weight once their estrogen levels plummet.

Ever since the results of the Women’s Health Initiative were released in 2002, physicians have stopped routinely recommending long-term use of estrogen for menopausal women because of the increased risk of heart disease, stroke, uterine cancer, and breast cancer.

Many experts have also generally agreed that weight gain after menopause is likely to occur regardless of whether do or don’t take hormone therapy. Thi

7 Simple Ways to Save 700 Calories

Oct 12, 2011 Posted Under: Uncategorized

I was putting the finishing touches on this blog post when an alert popped up—on my iPhone, of course—that Steve Jobs had passed away. And the first thing I recalled about the Apple founder was not his technological savvy or design genius, but his love/hate relationship with mortality. Jobs saw death not just as an adversary, but as a potent motivator. In his famous commencement speech at Stanford University, here’s what Jobs told the graduating class of 2005: “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” I’ve lived by those words since I first read them, and it’s readers like you who keep me answering “Yes,” day after day. Take, for example, Donn
